Should we consider nuclear energy? Throughout the month of March we will continue our discussion of nuclear power. Have you noticed it is mentioned a lot lately? In today’s show we discuss the growing percentage of people who support nuclear energy for our electricity needs, the numbers might surprise you. Is nuclear power safe, reliable or for that matter clean? If we’re looking to reduce energy usage; thereby our carbon footprint, is this the only way?

On the Show today: Dr. Jeff Schweitzer formerly served at the White House for the Clinton Administration. Working under President Clinton, Dr. Schweitzer was assigned to provide scientific and technological policy advice and analysis for the President of the United States, Vice President Al Gore and the Director of the OSTP, and to coordinate the U.S. government’s international science and technology cooperation (working with the president’s cabinet and 22 technical agencies) in countries throughout the world.

Schweitzer realized from that vantagepoint, “that one critical element was missing from global efforts to bring science, conservation and development together; there was no appropriate ethical foundation providing a compelling mandate.” In Beyond Cosmic Dice, Jeff proposes a completely new way to look at morality and ethics, free from any religious influence, and challenges the intrusion of religion in public life. He proposes a new natural ethic that offers a real alternative. Find additional articles of interest on the Huffington Post, Schweitzer is a regular contributor.

He joins us again today to discuss nuclear power – has it’s time come?

In our second half hour we’ll be speaking with H. Sterling Burnett, Ph.D., one of the country’s leading authorities on energy and environmental issues.

He is the lead analyst of the National Center for Policy Analysis‘(NCPA) E-Team – one of the largest collections of energy and environmental policy experts and scientists who believe that sound science, economic prosperity and protecting the environment can go hand in hand. A recognized scholar, Burnett has written on numerous topics that affect every American, including government environmental policy, offshore drilling, global warming, endangered species, and public lands.
He has held various positions in professional and public policy organizations, including serving as a member of the Environment and Natural Resources Task Force in the Texas Comptroller’s e-Texas commission, board of directors of the Dallas Woods and Water Conservation Club, and advisor for the American Legislative Exchange Council’s Natural Resources Task Force.

Visit the following links for some of Burnett’s published writings:

March will be devoted to discussing nuclear power; is it safe, reliable and most of all is it clean? We’ll talk to experts in the energy field who have spent their careers in this field.

We start of the series with Glenn McCullough, Jr., Chairman and CEO of GLM Associates. McCullough was nominated by President Clinton in 1999, and subsequently confirmed by the Senate to serve on the Tennessee Valley Authority Board, the nation’s largest utility. President Bush named McCullough Chairmen of the TVA Board of Directors in 2001, a position he held through the remainder of his term ending May 2005.

Visit his website to learn more.

Joyce McMahon joins us in our second half-hour. She serves as the Director of Communications for the Massachusetts Affordable, Reliable Electricity Alliance.

McMahon has provided written and verbal testimony before the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (Pilgrim Nuclear Stations relicensing) and the US Mineral Management Services (Cape Wind). McMahon’s grassroots efforts encouraged the support of businesses and consumers towards the 20 year renewal of Pilgrim Nuclear Stations license.

We have a lot to learn and beginning next week we will share the journey with you on our blog. To this end, we will continue to speak with CEO’s and industry leaders to bring you the most current information within the industry.
Today we speak with Jim Croce, President and CEO of The Nevada Institute for Renewable Energy Commercialization (NIREC). Croce has more than 25 years in the energy industry, five of which; he lead Michigan’s successful nonprofit business accelerator for alternative and renewable energy. He is an industry expert with leadership experience and an engineering background.
